From #1 New York Times bestselling author Abbi Glines comes the next sizzling novel in the Rosemary Beach series, featuring well-known playboy and Blaire’s half brother, Captain.
The look on Rose’s face had screamed that she was hiding something. Hell, she’d practically run away from me. There was something to that. I knew there was…
After ten years in the employ of a mysterious crime boss, River “Captain” Kipling is ready to leave his sordid past—and his cover occupation as an upscale restaurateur—behind him. The only thing standing in the way of his “retirement” is his commitment to launch a new restaurant in the resort town of Rosemary Beach. With his sister, Blaire, nearby, Captain can delay his dream of running a humble bar on the waterfront, but the unwanted attentions of his head server, Elle, have him itching to get out.
Until he notices Rose Henderson, the new server at the restaurant. All he knows about the pretty redhead with the cute glasses is that she’s a hardworking single mom from Oklahoma. But there’s something overly familiar about her laugh…something strange about the way she looks at Captain…
The Best Goodbye by Abbi Glines is an engaging and sweet second-chance-at-love romance. It is easily read as a standalone book, however, fans of Abbi Glines Rosemary Beach series will have more insight into the secondary characters.
The Characters are likable and engaging. Their difficult pasts make them jaded and wary about relationships. I found the characters past devastating, and I was rooting for them to have a future together. Addy/Rose was abandoned at age 12, and she entered the foster care system. Shipped from family to family, her life was a mess until she was placed with the Kipling family. While the family was quite dysfunctional, her foster brother,River, takes her under his wing and protects her. How could he not want to shield the delicate, petite, blonde beauty?
“Another foster home. I didn’t get attached to any of them. I’d stopped wishing fora family years ago.”
River/Captain was given up for adoption. He grows up with the Kipling family, and although he wasn’t shipped around, it is less than idyllic. His mom is broken and abusive as a result of her philandering husband, drugs and alcohol. River is blonde, handsome, popular and caring; his popularity at school rivals that of the jocks. He loses the one person he cares most about when he believes that his adoptive mother has finally killed Addy with her abuse. This loss decimates him and defines his life. He makes it his goal to fight abuse. As an adult he is sexy and commanding, but he is never available emotionally.
“When River Joshua Kipling decided you were worth protecting, he did it with everything he had.”
Frank is “Rose’s” adorable little girl. She’s Addy’s mini-me, a bit precocious, and desperate to meet her daddy.
“Have a wonderful day. Make it matter, [Addy] said. I got this, [Franny] assured her mother.”
The plot is evenly paced. The story is primarily about the reunion of River and Addy. It is told in dual time periods. The past is revealed from River’s point of view, and the present is told from both Rose’s and Captain’s perspectives. This interesting structure makes the relative straight-forward story much more interesting. There is a small sub plot that involves Captain’s past life. For fans of the series, the tiny bit of foreboding is probably enough to make that storyline interesting, but for me, as a new reader, it felt like an underdeveloped side story.
Overall, a 4-star read for me. The Best Goodbye is the perfect amount of sexy and romantic. It is a hopeful, feel-good romance that inspired me to dig into the rest of Abbi Glines’ books.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Atria Books in exchange for an honest review.
