Review:

Goofy Newfies by Ann Omasta is a lighthearted novella about how a pet can work their way into your heart even when you’re sure you don’t want one.

The story opens at a funeral service where newly widowed Lily wonders why she isn’t more upset about her husband’s passing. Unfortunately, she puts her pondering to paper and her publisher unwittingly sends it to a magazine for publishing.  The result is a publicist’s dream–a lot of publicity, but much to Lily’s dismay, it is mostly negative. She is branded the Ice Queen, and she does a lot to live up to the moniker.  When Rascal the rambunctious Newfoundland puppy, finds his way into Lily’s home, she does her best to be a snarky ice queen when returning the puppy to her handsome next door neighbor, Donovan.

I didn’t connect much with Lily as a character.  I completely understood her feelings–or lack thereof–for her late husband, but I couldn’t get into her generally disagreeable attitude .  Donovan the animal lover is a bit of a mystery, but his character is warm and likable.  The litter of puppies that Donovan inherited steals the show; you can’t help but fall in love with those adorable fur-balls!  I got a stronger idea of Lily’s feelings towards those puppies than I did for the budding relationship with Donovan. Overall, this quick read is a fun escape–especially for animal lovers.

Can Rascal worm his way into Lily’s life, or will muddy paw prints and slobber keep him from being adopted? Is Donovan the ultimate pet matchmaker or does he use puppies to score dates? You’ll have to read this heartwarming tale to find out if it is puppy love or not!
