Royal Scandal, a sexy all-new STANDALONE from Marquita Valentine is now LIVE!!!

Fairy tales do come true—and so do tabloid scandals! New York Times bestselling author Marquita Valentine kicks off a juicy contemporary romance series with a novel about a prince whose best-laid plans go deliciously awry when he marries the maid next door.

Forced to flee to the United States with his siblings after their parents’ assassination, Crown Prince Colin Sinclair takes it upon himself to become the caretaker of his family while hiding out near Charlotte, North Carolina. But after a decade in hiding, the secret’s out and Parliament demands that Colin wed a princess of their choosing. Unwilling to play their game, Colin decides to marry an American instead, and he has the perfect candidate in mind.

As a home-service professional, Della Hughes doesn’t believe in storybook endings. But when her best friend and secret crush reveals that he’s a flesh-and-blood prince, she doesn’t know what to think. Still, she’ll do anything for Colin, including becoming his wife—in name only, of course. But when their plans to stay purely platonic go by the wayside, their fake honeymoon turns all too real. After a week of white-hot nights, Della can no longer deny her feelings—not with a happily ever after so tantalizingly close.

Review:

Royal Scandal is the first book in Marquita Valentine’s Royals in Exile Series. In general, I like Marquita Valentine’s writing style. I enjoyed the main characters, Colin and Della, and their noticeable chemistry. The general idea of a fairytale story is adorable, but many of the details missed the mark for me.

I loved the idea of the exiled royalty finding love with the commoner. I enjoyed that the friends-to-lovers transition happened over an extended period of time; the foundation of Colin and Della’s solid friendship is believable. Crown Prince Colin Sinclair is a successful business man whose appeal lies in his devotion to his siblings/family. While he can be charming, it is really that familial loyalty that Della Hughes finds attractive. Della and her step-mother, Tressie, are the salt-of-the Earth. In fact, I’d say that secondary character, Tressie, is my absolute favorite of all. Her calmness and sage advice made her a lovable influence over the rest of the characters. She provided the calm in the storm, and she frequently got everyone centered and refocused. Everyone could use a Tressie in their life.

Some works of fiction are realistic, and some require suspension-of-disbelief. Royal Scandal does require a bit of suspension of disbelief, and even with that, there were a couple key things that just didn’t work for me. First, the assassinated parents. Their egregious behavior was overplayed, and the addition of questionable parentage was too much. That may play into the grander series arc, but for me, it felt like an unnecessary addition to the story. Another unnecessary addition to the story was the pseudo-kink/erotica once the main characters eventually consummate their relationship. It added absolutely nothing and felt entirely out of place and out of character. The parents’ storyline and the kink made the book feel unfocused. Sometimes less is more when it comes to plot points and antagonists.

Overall, Royal Scandal was a quick, entertaining read that contains plenty of characters and situations to appreciate. I would have thoroughly loved the book had Ms. Valentine not added so many extraneous issues at the story’s zenith. While I had several issues with Royal Scandal, I wouldn’t hesitate to continue with the series in hopes that the overall storyline comes together.
