When Life Happened by Jewel E. Ann

Publication Date: June 5th, 2017

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Parker Cruse despises cheaters. It might have something to do with her boyfriend sleeping with her twin sister.

After a wedding day prank involving a strong laxative, that ends the already severed relationship between the twins, Parker decides to grow up and act twenty-six.

Step One: Move out of her parents’ house.

Step Two: Find a job.

Opportunity strikes when she meets her new neighbor, Gus Westman. He’s an electrician with Iowa farm-boy values and a gift for saying her name like it’s a dirty word.

He also has a wife.

Sabrina Westman, head of a successful engineering firm, hires Parker as her personal assistant. Driven to be the best assistant ever, Parker vows to stay focused, walk the dog, go to the dry cleaners, and not kiss Gus—again.

Step Three: Don’t judge.

Step Four: Remember— when life happens, it does it in a heartbeat.

My Thoughts:

☆☆➹⁀☆ 5 stars☆➹⁀☆☆

The pause between steps, the blink of an eye, the split-second before you decide which fork in the road to take–that is when life happens. One direction is black, and the other is white. Or, are they both different hues of gray? That is a question explored in When Life Happened by Jewel E. Ann.

As a long time fan of Jewel E. Ann’s writing, I’ve never been disappointed. Each of her books has provided me with hours of entertainment. The author’s writing style is fun and infectious while she shares her own life’s-meaning messages. Her characters are quirky and unique, yet undeniably real. Whether dorky or kick-ass, I’d choose each or her heroines to be my best friend, and her heroes are each swoon-worthy in their own way.

Parker Cruse is an adorable and hilarious character. In her efforts to live life by a plan, her list making and excessive organization has made her a delightfully out-of-control and an unsuccessful mess. Her mother is a prude. Her dad goes with the flow to keep the peace. Her backstabbing twin sister and Parker’s ex-boyfriend are again flaunting their disloyalty in her face when they not only move back to Iowa, but into Parker’s personal space. Her handsome next-door neighbor has an adorable dog and an attractive, absentee wife. Parker, bless her heart, has so many roadblocks and detours, that her life is destined for a collision.

When Life Happened is filled with humorous moments, uncomfortable choices, and disappointing outcomes. It is also filled with love, forgiveness, and second chances.

For readers who abhor any story containing adultery, don’t write off this book. Yes, there is some evidence of cheating and “lust in your heart” cheating. It is not presented as condoned behavior. The story is not about finding love through adultery so much as it is about the path you choose when the situation arises.

True to the message of the book, the storyline took me completely by surprise. I did not expect the twist. My heart was broken. My brain was confused. After a cartoonish head shaking, and a slight shift in paradigm, I saw the light. Life takes a certain amount of tenacity and spunk. Finding the “rightful owner” of your heart requires bravery and appreciating each day with “your person”.

“For the tiniest moment, she let herself wonder if everything in her life to that point had truly led her to him.”

Jewel E. Ann is a talented storyteller. I love her writing style as much as her incredible characters. Avoid spoiler reviews, leave your preconceived notions at the door of the bookstore, and read When Life Happened. It is on my list of 2017 Top Reads.
