What It’s About:

The only thing more hilarious than the movies is… real life?!

Stylist Gemma Jones is competing for a once-in-a-lifetime promotion. All she has to do is take some fashion-backward guy from geek to GQ-worthy. The only problem? The man in question is her hairy manwhore of a next-door neighbor. AKA Bigfoot.

Zach Morrison has zero interest in being Gemma’s makeover mannequin. Sure, it’s fun getting his smart-mouthed neighbor all riled up, but after cashing out of his tech start-up and going through an ugly break-up, he’s taking a permanent vacation. If he wants to wear sweatpants and sleep on a mattress in the corner of an empty apartment—

OK. Maybe he needs a little push in the right direction. But as Gemma races the clock to win her bet, she finds that Bigfoot’s been hiding a few things under his baggy flannel shirts. Like abs of steel, and a surprisingly big…

Heart. He has a big heart.

Soon, sparks are flying between this unlikely couple, but can Zach embrace a fresh start – however manscaped it might be? And will Gemma beat out her Instabitch rival for the top spot – and keep the truth about their bet from Zach?

My Thoughts:

How To Choose a Guy in 10 Days is the start of Lila Monroe’s new rom-com series.  This novella is absolutely adorable!  The characters are lovable and the story line is pure fun.

Stylist Gemma Jones just barely tolerates her loud, burly neighbor whom she has dubbed Big Foot. When she and her co-worker enter into a bet that will determine the fate of their careers, she is inadvertently saddled with convincing “Big Foot’ to allow her to give him a lifestyle overhaul.

Big Foot’s real name is Zach Morrison; he is a one-time programmer and entrepreneur who hit it big when he sold his company.  Since he is hiding away from life and sulking about his failed marriage, his personal appearance has taken a backseat to gaming. Agreeing to Gemma’s offer for a makeover gives him the opportunity to give her a hard time.   However, when these two get started, the chemistry can’t be denied.

Gemma and Zach are fantastic characters.  Author Lila Monroe has a knack for creating genuine characters and building in organic dialogue that draws readers into the story.  I really enjoyed the relationship development and the dynamics with the secondary characters. The flow and pace of the story are perfect, and as Gemma begins to see that Zach is truly a great guy, Zach starts to realize how mired in the mud he’d become after his judgmental ex-wife left him.  Naturally, the ex-wife provides a little angst, and added to that is the secret bet that Gemma has entered into.  While it is easy to see where the storyline is going, the journey to the HEA is great.  How To Choose a Guy in 10 Days is light, escapism at its best.
