Review: A Very COVID Christmas by Maggie Aldrich

About the Book:

Dating during a pandemic takes on a whole new meaning.

My Thoughts:

You’ve heard the Ben Franklin adage that guests, like fish, begin to smell after three days, and we can all agree that the saying also applies to COVID-19. Author Maggie Aldrich gives us readers a lighter look at life and love in the time of “The COVID-19”

Main character and narrator, Kinsey’s situation typifies the struggle of creating a sense of normal life during the pandemic. Her Zoom meetings, and sidebar chats with coworkers, are hilarious. Online dating takes on a new meaning, but nothing beats the old-school, organic meeting of potential “masked” dates. I wasn’t in love with Kinsey’s affectation of using British colloquialisms after binge watching British TV during the shelter-in-place, and I loved it when her “Niece Reese” called her out on it. Kinsey was otherwise fun and relatable. Reese was an adorable addition to the story, and I loved her tongue-in-cheek humor regarding her parents’ favorite charity.

I enjoy Ms. Aldrich’s storytelling, and she nicely delivers the message of the importance of wearing a mask with a light touch of humor. Her holiday romantic comedy is a quick, fun read. Between coworker antics and neighbor hijinks, there are a lot of laughs. I started reading this book with a bit a skepticism, but Ms. Aldrich’s characters and story quickly won me over. A Very COVID Christmas has the right amount of realism and humor in a charming, sweet romance.
