About the Book:
Cort van Breda has won 35 death matches as a fighter in an MMA circuit so deep underground there are no rules and only the winner gets out alive.
They call him the Sick Heart.
They say he’s a shameless monster.
They say he’s a ruthless killer.
They say he’s as twisted as the man who owns him.
They say a lot of things about Cort van Breda.
But in our world violence is money, and money is winning, and winning is life, and life is the only thing that matters.
Except… he wasn’t meant to win that last fight.
And I wasn’t meant to be his prize.
But he did.
And I am.
And now his sick heart owns me.
WARNING: This is a sweet love story adrift in an ocean of evil. It is about two survivors dealing with their darkest secrets while they fight to change their lives. It is for mature readers only and has descriptions of deeply disturbing situations. There will be pearl clutching.

My Thoughts:
I was blown away by Julie’s latest release! Sick Heart has all those great elements of the Huss books we know and love as well as layers of emotion and vulnerability. Find a comfy chair and call out sick because you won’t want to put this book down!
I picked up Sick Heart with a little trepidation when I read author J.A. Huss’ description that the book was a dark romance featuring a MMA fighter, but I was pleasantly surprised by this book. Despite the dark scenes in a tragic story setting, there is a sweet romance, worthy survivors, and a boy who becomes a beloved leader.
I can’t lie, the dark scenes are quite disturbing, but if you can get beyond that, Sick Heart is a beautiful story of hope and courage. I loved Anya and Cort as well as Cort’s troupe. Secondary characters Maart and Rainer were not fully explored as characters, but that allowed for some interesting turns in the story.
Ms. Huss has created another intriguing world of power and conspiracy; her underdog characters are equally strong and vulnerable. They might be down, but don’t count them out! The pace is slower than most of the author’s books. The slower scenes allow for the character and backstory development, and provide a respite from the high-octane, heart-racing action scenes. Sick Heart is a unique, cross-genre book that took me completely by surprise.
